Karen is a painter working predominantly in oils and occasionally watercolour and gouache. residing in Shropshire, she takes inspiration from street scenes in the local towns and villages and can be seen out frequently with a sketchbook recording new ideas for compositions that can evolve later in the studio.
Other favoured subjects are marine scenes and still life paintings, especially during the winter months, setting up chosen objects under strong light in the studio.
Attracted to subjects with strong shapes and tonal intensity Karen’s work stems from academic drawing, painted with broad strokes evoking contrast that seeks to ask questions about how we perceive colour and tone.
